A variety of free courses and workshops are delivered by our tutors throughout the academic year but do change each term depending on the Centre's timetable, funding and the number of people interested in attending - a minimum of 3 learners for a workshop and 5 for courses.

Intro to IT


Details

This course is designed for people with little or no knowledge of computers, or those who are refreshing their skills. Progression to Improver's IT is recommended. 4 sessions of 3 hours each.

  • Using the mouse and keyboard 
  • Using the internet safely 
  • Creating basic documents 
  • Saving your work correctly

Details:

  • None Accredited Duration-1 session per week for 4 weeks 3 hours per session.
  • Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC.
  • This course provides the learner with basic Digital Skills.
  • 6 sessions of 3 hours each


Learn About:

  • Keyboard & Mouse Basics Identify Hardware & Software. Identify Input & Output Devices.
  • Use Microsoft Office Word To Create Documents - including cut, copy & paste/Inserting & formatting images.
  • Internet Use/Online Safety/Communicating - including send & receive emails/organise email folders.
  • File Handling.
  • Using the Spellcheck tool.


Progression: ITQ 1 accredited qualifications

Food Hygiene Level 2

Details

Accredited Duration-1 session per week for 5 weeks 3 hours per session Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC, at 'outreach' centres and online.

This course is designed to provide the learner with an in depth knowledge of the food hygiene requirements for work or volunteering.

Suitable for people who want to work or volunteer in a place that prepares, serves or sells food to members of staff and/or to the general public.


What It Covers:

  • Handwashing & Contamination Bacteriology,
  • Food Poisoning & Diseases,
  • Temperature control Deliveries,
  • Cleaning & Disinfection,
  • Design Of Premises Pest Control,
  • Food Safety & The Law,
  • Food Safety Management Recap, Revision, Mock Exam & Live Exam


Requirements

You must have a good understanding of English, attend every session and complete homework.

Level 2 Allergy Awareness

Details

Accredited Duration-1 session per week for 3 weeks 2 & a half hours per session Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC, at 'outreach' centres and online.

This course is designed to provide the learner with an in-depth knowledge of food allergies and how to manage them in a work or volunteering environment.

Suitable for people who want to work or volunteer in a place that prepares, serves or sells food to members of staff and/or to the general public.

Bridging the Maths Gap

Details:

A fully funded 5-week course for those over 19 years or who don’t have a Level 2 in maths. This is designed for those who find maths frightening and need a little more encouragement & support to gain confidence in using maths.


Progression:

Entry level 3 up to Level 2 accredited qualifications with Kirklees College, delivered at Crosland Moor Community Learning Centre.


NUTRITION & HEALTHY EATING

Details

None Accredited Duration-1 session per week for 4 weeks 3 hours per session Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC, at 'outreach' centres and online.

This course is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of basic nutrition and what a healthy balanced diet should be.


Learn about:

  1. What good nutrition is and why we need good nutrition to keep healthy and active.
  2. The relationship between healthy foods and fluids and the human body.
  3. The role of carbohydrates, fibre, protein, vitamins & minerals and fats play in the human body.
  4. Using the Eat well Guide to understand what foods make a balanced diet.
  5. Create an awareness of the changing requirements of a healthy diet through different life stages.


On completion of the course, learners will receive shopping vouchers.

ESOL FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

Details

None Accredited Duration-1 session per week for 6 weeks 2 hours per session Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC.

This course is designed to help speakers of other languages improve their confidence with English speaking, listening, reading & writing skills in a relaxed environment.

Suitable for those whose first language is not English and are waiting to go on to do ESOL at college or for those who would like to be part of the wider community. The course content will vary, to be more tailored for those attending.


Learn About:

How To Introduce Yourself & Make 'Small Talk' such as the weather and daily routines Food & Shopping such as identifying food items or meals and how to pay Health & Wellbeing such as how to describe how you are feeling and identify parts of the body.

EVERYDAY SPREADSHEETS FOR WORK & LIFE

Details:

None Accredited/Accredited to Level 1 Duration- total 24 hours over 8 weeks. Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC

This course provides the learner with basic digital skills to create simple spreadsheets and charts.


Learn About:

  • Create & edit a simple spreadsheet
  • Insert different formulas and replicate
  • Create & edit charts to meet the needs of different audiences.

MONEY MANAGEMENT & BUDGETING SKILLS

Details

None Accredited Duration- 1 Session per week for 4 weeks 2-hours per session Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC and 'outreach' centres.

This course provides the learner with skills to manage their money better by learning how to budget and spend well.


Learn About:

  • Understand the different bank accounts, credit cards and be able to read and understand a statement
  • Understand about borrowing money, what APR stands for and how to work it out
  • Be able to budget money coming in and going out and be able to identify ways to cut spending. 

MONEY SMART WORKSHOP

Details

None Accredited Duration- A 3-hour Workshop Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC and 'outreach' centres.

This workshop provides the learner with information and money saving tips to reduce costs.

  • 'My Attitude To Money'
  • Tips For Saving Energy - including examples of yearly savings & how to be energy efficient in each room
  • Saving Money On Food & Food Waste - including main causes, best before/use by dates & leftovers
  • Swap & Recycle Websites
  • Food Banks Comparison
  • Websites Where to get help & advice for debt


On completion of the workshop, learners will receive shopping vouchers.

SPREADSHEETS & SUMS WORKSHOP

Details

None Accredited Duration-A 3-hour workshop Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC

This workshop provides the learner with basic digital skills to create simple spreadsheets and charts.


Learn About:

  • Create a simple spreadsheet to perform a set of calculations on a data set
  • Check the results given by the spreadsheet manually
  • Create a simple chart to represent the data set
  • Name 3 different types of charts.

On completion of the workshop, learners will receive shopping vouchers.

PENNY PINCHING PIZZAS WORKSHOP

Details

 

None Accredited Duration- A 3-hour Workshop Held throughout the year at Crosland Moor CLC and 'outreach' centres.

Create, bake and eat your own pizza whilst learning basic maths and food safety skills.


Learn About:

 Gaining knowledge of basic food safety in order to prepare food that is safe to eat.

Understand how to calculate the cost of each topping and then calculate the overall cost of the pizza.

Be able to apply the calculation method to work out the cost of a pizza for a family of 4.


On completion of the workshop, learners will receive either a cookbook or shopping vouchers.
